You guys actually play with your LEGO?
Hi All,
Long time collector.. haven't really been part of the AFOL community since being involved in a mailing list way back when. Usual story of playing with LEGO as a kid.. etc.. but now collect LEGO a lot more seriously and keep it all sealed.. the part people have a problem coming to grips with.. and I worry about things like shelf wear (thus the name) . Currently trying to finish off the City collection from the 2010 catalogue (if someone knows where I can find 8404 I would appreciate it!)
Was hoping I might find some like minded people who also keep their LEGO sealed so I don't feel as crazy.. because if at least one other person does it.. I can rub this INSANE stamp off my forehead.
Recently finished a visit to LEGO Land in Denmark and also the Lego Discovery Center in Berlin, hoping to visit some of the others in the not too distant future!
Found this site because I was looking for information on shipping forwarding from the US LEGO store (hoping to save some money on the rarer items).
Here is where I am at according to Peeron (hope that means I don't have to be a Sheep-Dog forever!):
Totals: 258 Sets (228 unique), 34,617 Parts, 306 Minifigs.

Anyway, if TRU doesn't have any 8404 public transports left or you could try BTTW too !
Keep on bricking !

Re: You guys actually play with your LEGO?
Ouch, that will hurt her bank balance !
I do have some sets as MISB, but they are only small city sets which are no longer in production.....but if my son wants to build them I'll let him....I just that kind of dad !
The only real sets I collect and NOT open/build are impulse packs, I have all but two in the last 4 years - even have an empty merchandiser so one day I can display the boxes (always made sure I brought more than one so I/my son had fun with them too.

Nope, you are insane I can't see the point of not enjoying my Lego. Until it's out of the box it's just not any fun.

Re: You guys actually play with your LEGO?
Wow, so how many years back in the city theme do you go back? It must be a great collection. I must admit, I've still got most of the 2010 range sitting in their boxes waiting to be built, but I just don't have a home for them. I've even got an 8404 in it's box while I try and figure out where to fit a light rail into my train layout
Re: You guys actually play with your LEGO?
I keep some MISB but I always have 2 so I can build one :D

Re: You guys actually play with your LEGO?
I play... my husband would be a collector if I didn't take apart his sets for the bits I need
(My husband doesn't MOC, he loves sets... I have no interest in the sets themselves, I just see them as potential for fulfilling what is in my head).
So our house is a battle between collecting and playing... playing wins

Re: You guys actually play with your LEGO?
I play with all of my LEGO.
I would only keep the boxes if I had room to store them all.
I'm not crazy about collecting sets and keeping them original, because I always need more bricks. In fact I have just parted out my 4504 Millenium Falcon for spare parts.

Red_Five
I will buy a LEGO set and then build it.
I'll leave it built overnight whilst I gather thoughts on how make it better and how to make it move.
If it fails, the elements end up being sorted for possible use in a MOC.

Re: You guys actually play with your LEGO?
When i first read this topic i thought wtf but now i'm actually going to buy some MISB 12v era train sets lol. starting small of course, bit like an investment/hobby thing though.
Re: You guys actually play with your LEGO?
As an investment the 12V era might not be the best choice for a couple of reasons. Firstly, they're already pretty pricey MISB, so there may be a limit to how much they appreciate in the future, secondly the demand for them may not grow as fast as other sets since most AFOLs emerge from their dark ages in their mid twenties to early thirties, so most of those who feel nostalgic for this period probably are already in the market.
My choice for investment MISB sets would probably be the exclusive trains and modular houses at retail.
Of course I may very well be wrong on this, and collector markets are alien to me so I have no experience to go by in my guesswork.
If you purely want them for nostalgias sake, buying nice used ones you can actually play with without losing money seems a better deal.

i dont 'play' with lego, but i build stuff, for display... i dont 'swoosh' the star wars fighters etc.
building isnt playing is it? cos i build and experiment with creations. i also have about 30 MISB sets which wont get opened for now.

Re: You guys actually play with your LEGO?
I guess it depends a lot on who describing it. Some train heads say the operate model railways to prototypical timetables. Other people might describe that as playing with toy trains.
I don't get too hung up about it myself, while I do build stuff for train shows, it's the fun that I get building and seeing other peoples stuff that makes it worthwhile. I'm happy enough if people see that as playing with LEGO. I've never really cared much about what others think of my hobbies.

Thought quite carefully about this actually and yeah your advice seems good. Thinking I may just purchase a couple of the small MISB sets eg the Crane wagon, the Shell tank - from what i see those smaller ones can be got for around $100 - 200 which seems okay for me personally. But yeah no way will I shell out $2500 for the full train misb's.
It seems better like you suggested to go for boxed but playable good condition stuff instead, hence i'm looking to purchase the best condition used ones i can find (with boxes and instructions of course).
Also it's funny but I found a whole heap of my own Exo force sets that are unopened lol, sometimes I buy and just forget about them. I will keep them unopened especially that Golden mecha one ^^
Re: You guys actually play with your LEGO?
I must admit, that some of my sets are display pieces....but I play with 4207 garage and in fact built a shop for it....it's fun working the lift. Takes me back over thirty five years ago.....yeah, I'm getting old.
It all depends if you are young at heart or not....perhaps.
