review on set 8017 Vader's TIE
I got this set the other day. For those who have yet to see it or have no idea as what set it is, it's the new Vader's TIE. I say new because the old TIE was released in 2 different sets. One was a TIE battle set which came with the TIE/F, TIE/Int, Vaders tie (the TIE/Adv) and the drone fighter. The other set it came in was another battle set with the y-wing. The later set is the one I got.
Now obviously there have been some updates since the old one. The first being the color scheme. Back then like the TIES it was black with blue trim, this one is black with grey trim. And in fact the colors are all the way through this one. The body's rear section has also been made bigger compared to the old one, they actually managed to make the hyperdrive for this one. The 2 things I found odd with this one was the missles, which we never saw in the movie (ANH) so I am not even sure it is canon or not. Probably not, however lego probably put them in to give the fighter a bit more use. The other one was the placement of vader's lightsaber. For some reason they decided to have it clip to the underside behind the cockpit just under the hyperdrive. Now the older tie you could simply place it inside the fighter as the top hatch opened without the window moving up. With this one it follows the same formula as the TIE/f and Int with the window opening as well. Also there are stickers used in this set, only 4 so for those who are sticker envy you need not worry too much. One on each wing in the centerfuge part, the other 2 are located near the top hatch one behind and one in front. The top hatch itself is the typical TIE/F Int printed one.
Build 10/10 relatively quick as it more or less follows the same module as the other ties during building.
likeness to flim 9/10 only because of the missiles and also the location of the saber mount.
design 10/10 lego made sure they didn't leave any gaps this time, unlike the y-wing.....
Price per parts 10/10 well the set was only $47 from k-mart but it were not marked down it is normally $50 anyway.
I recommend you all get one, if you already have the old one, get this one anyway and use the instructions to mod the old one's rear section correctly. If you don't have the old one, get it anyway as it is a great looking fighter.

Re: review on set 8017 Vader's TIE
Pics have been added to my folder....
EDIT: Deep links are now up
Front view
Top view
Wings
Underside
Another thing you may notice is the sticker behind the hatch. It appears in the pic as though I have put it on incorrectly, however that is the way it is printed. I did actually put it on straight. The overhead pic shows it better.

Yeah unfortunately that is brickshelf for you, you can just go to my folder instead, but you won't be able to see the pics up close for the detail. Here is the folder itself:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=212576
Also special note to the a-wings there as well. One is the old set and the other is the newer set that came out last year. Now I modded the old one to match the new one at the rear fins and the power reactor at the back.

Re: review on set 8017 Vader's TIE
Hi Keetong. A quick question about your deep-linking; I did that with my review, but when I previewed before posting, the forum page only showed three-quarters of the pic. Even going through the hosting option it doesn't show the full pic. So, what am I doing wrong?
Great review by the way! I love the Star Wars movies, as well as the pics you've put up, but I think I'll stick with City. (I'll go broke otherwise!!)

Unfortuanly your pictures must to big for the page, after a certain size the forum just cuts out a certain size. I don't know if you can, but on my camera I'm able to adjust the size of the picture taken. Oh and its not my review.marvinblue wrote:Hi Keetong. You could also fix the problem by resizing the pics in paint or something.

I ended up getting it for $37
Great sets but LEGO made acouple building shortcuts. but they can easily be filled. But its great eye-candy, the one thing that annoys me is the flick-fire thing it looks ugly. I'll probable take it out.
Vader looks alot better then the older one too.

In regards to your brickshelf folder, as Keetong mentioned it could be the size of your pics. However it may depend on how many pics you are looking at once. I think there are some options in brickshelf that you can use to change the format type. I don't know as I have never had any issues. The other thing you can do if you have not done so is to create a photobucket folder.
With photobucket its very much like flckr. You can upload more than one pic at once as well. On each pic it gives you different deep links in different formats so you can post the link and the pic will appear on here instead of the link. However if you have multiple pics it may take some time for them to all load so people can see them. I don't do that as I find it can take too long to get the pics to load. I use links to brickshelf as that way it does load faster and people may only want to see one pic for reference rather than having to go through the whole page.
Here is photobucket if you want to use it. It is free so no fee for membership etc.
